The Ridgefield Park Police Department will be holding an entrance exam for the position of Police Officer on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 6:00 PM.  Pre-registration is required, at which time a non-refundable fee of $100.00 in the form of a money order must be submitted along with an application.

The list of necessary qualifications are posted below.  The list of qualifications will also be provided to all applicants at the time an application is requested.

Qualified applicants may begin to pick up/drop off applications at Ridgefield Park Police Headquarters (234 Main Street, Ridgefield Park, NJ) beginning on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 8:00 AM.  Applications must be returned with the $100.00 testing fee (money order only) no later than Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 12:00 PM.  Upon returning a completed application, qualified applicants will be pre-registered, and will be provided with a study guide and location of the written examination.

The Ridgefield Park Police Department will utilize the same exercises and standards on the physical fitness phase of its entrance exam as the NJ Police Training Commission for pre-admission tests.

Qualifications for the position of Police Officer

  • As per NJSA 40A:14-122, candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered for appointment as a sworn police officer with the Department:
    1. Be a citizen of the United States
    2. Be sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System of New Jersey as to his/her eligibility for membership in the retirement system;
    3. Be able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently; and
    4. Be of good moral character, and has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
  • Candidates shall be between 18 and 35 years of age at the time of appointment. Candidates with prior police service are permitted to deduct their years of prior service from their current age to meet the maximum age requirement.
  • As per 40A:14-122.8, candidates shall reside in New Jersey at the time of their appointment, and thereafter.
  • Additionally, candidates shall:
    1. Have completed or be able to complete a basic police training course at a school approved and authorized by the NJ Police Training Commission.
    2. Possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License at the time of appointment and thereafter.
    3. Not be prohibited from purchasing, owning, possessing or controlling a firearm as per 2C:39-7 or prohibited from obtaining a firearms ID card or Permit to Purchase a Handgun as per 2C:58-3. and
    4. Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, or be a declared criminal justice major with 60 or more credits toward a bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree, or four years active military service with an honorable discharge.   Education must have been obtained at a recognized college or university.
  • Candidates are subject to a comprehensive background investigation, as well as medical and psychological examinations and drug testing by urinalysis.
  • A negative result for the drug test by urinalysis is a condition of employment.  A positive result for the drug test by urinalysis will result in the candidate being dropped from consideration, cause the applicant’s name to be reported to the central drug registry maintained by the Division of State Police and preclude the applicant from consideration for future law enforcement employment for a period of two (2) years.  Candidates employed by another law enforcement agency who produce a positive drug test will have the results reported to their employer and are subject to termination and will be permanently barred from future law enforcement employment in New Jersey.
