The Ridgefield Park Police Department is attempting to increase the number of officers on its staff who are part of certain underrepresented groups.

The Department is seeking to hire candidates who are African American, Asian, and Latino heritage. The Department is also seeking to hire female candidates. The goal of this recruitment effort is to encourage qualified candidates who fall into the above referenced groups to apply and take the entrance examination.

Rather it is anticipated that increasing the number of qualified, underrepresented candidates in the applicant pool will increase the chances of underrepresented candidates finishing high in the selection process.

Currently there are no imminent plans to hire police officers. However, qualified candidates are encouraged to submit a resume to Chief Edward Rose. In the event that a testing process is announced, resumes on file will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be notified of the testing process.

Minimum qualifications for the position of Police Officer are as follows:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States
  2. Be sound in bod and good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System of New Jersey as to his/her eligibility for membership in the retirement system;
  3. Be able to read, write, and speak the English language well and intelligently;
  4. Be of good moral character, and has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
  5. Be of the legal age for employment as a police officer as dictated by State lay.
  6. As per 40A:14-122.8, candidates shall reside in New Jersey at the time of their appointment, and thereafter.

Additionally, candidates shall:

  1. Have completed or be able to complete a basic police training course at a school approved and authorized by the NJ Police Training Commission
  2. Possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  3. Not be prohibited from purchasing, owning, possessing, or controlling a firearm as per 2C:39-7 or prohibited from obtaining a firearms ID card or Permit to Purchase a Handgun as per 2C:58-3 and
  4. Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, or be a declared criminal justice major with 60 or more credit toward a bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree.

The entrance examination process consists of a written test, physical agility test, oral examination, and one or more oral interviews. A thorough background examination will be conducted of final candidates prior to any conditional offer of employment. Candidates who are given conditional officers of employment shall be require to successfully complete a drug screening process, a medical examination, and a physiological examination.
