Bicycle Safety Summons Program
The Bicycle Safety Summons Program runs through June and ends in September. Any juvenile under the age of 17 who is observed wearing a helmet while on a bicycle, rollerblades, or skate board is issued a “reward summons” entitling them to refreshment from one of our local businesses. After the reward summons is issued to a juvenile their parent or guardian must sign the reward summons before they can receive their refreshment. This program is a great opportunity for officers to engage the Village juveniles in a positive encounter.
We would like to thank Dante’s Pizzeria, Little Italy Pizza, 7-11 and Dunkin Donuts for their continued support of the program.
Wear a Helmet – It’s the Law
New Jersey Law states that bike riders under the age of 17 must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet while bicycling, skateboarding or rollerblading.
- Always ensure a proper fit by tightening the chin strap to keep the helmet from slipping.
- A properly worn helmet is the single most effective safety device available to reduce brain injury and death by as much as 88% (Dr Koop MD, former US Surgeon General)
- Use Caution at Intersections – More than 70% of bicycle motor vehicle crashes occur at driveways or intersections.
- Bicycles should be seen and heard. Wear bright clothes that make you more visible to motorists. All bicycles should be equipped with some type of audible device (horn or bell).
